Aussie Girl’s Guide To Coffee In: Budapest, Hungary

Filed in: travel

Best Coffee In Budapest | Hungary | The Macadames - 7

Note: I am not a coffee connoisseur or anything, I just like good coffee. I don’t know the coffee lingo or the ways to describe flavour, but I have done my best to do so. If you actually know what you’re talking about, please don’t laugh. The intention of his post was to find good coffee shops to save you having to suffer bad coffee. I hope they help. Happy travels! xx

Where is the best coffee in Budapest?

Well, if you’re like me and luuuuuurve coffee, you won’t be disappointed in the Hungarian capital.

Every second corner seemed to have a tiny hole in the wall coffee shop with house roasted beans and chatty baristas.

Having only a few days to explore, I did my research and tried to get to as many as possible. These venues are my favourite and are all well worth a visit.

Madal Cafe

Location: Hollán Ernő u. 3, 13th district

Coffee (4/5): I ordered a cappuccino, and although it came out looking more like a flat white, it was near perfect. It was perfectly presented, creamy and flavoursome. Their prices however around 490HUF, offering great value.

Atmosphere: With light coloured woods and white walls, it comes across as fresh and bright. It was rather quiet when I visited which I liked.

Seating: A few tables and bench seating inside with a few outdoor seats.

Service: My barista was friendly, not overbearing and happy to chat.

Food: Pastries and packaged snacks. They also sell a wide range of coffee/tea speciality goods.

Wifi: Yes

Tamp & Pull

Location: Czuczor utca 3, 9th district

Coffee (5/5):  By far the best coffee i’ve had in Europe. I ordered a flat white and the mister a latte. The flat white had such an incredible fine roast flavour that I didn’t even need to add my normal 1 brown sugar (almost never happens!). The latte was just as good with a strong (not bitter in anyway) flavour and perfectly frothed milk. Their prices are among the cheapest I found, around 400HUF, offering exceptional value.

Atmosphere: From see through espresso machines to various coffee making implements hanging on the walls, it definitely has a coffee lab feel. It was mid morning when I visited so I was surprised to find it rather quiet.

Seating: Mostly bench seating and a handful of tables inside and outside.

Service: Staffed by award-winning baristas, if you have any questions – this is the place to go. My barista was chatty, helpful and handed over my liquid gold with a smile.

Food: Snacks, sandwiches, biscuits & pastries.

Wifi: No. But they have a uni next door so I don’t blame them.

My Little Melbourne

Location: Madách Imre út 3, 7th district

Coffee (4.5/5)I ordered the latte which was very, very good. The flavour was smooth, creamy and hot, just the way I like it.

Atmosphere: Cute & quirky with a relaxed atmosphere. They have definitely tried to channel the “Melbourne” vibe with a fixie hanging from the roof and a bunch of sportsgear.

Seating: On the small side but laid out well. There is loads of outdoor seating and a cute nook upstairs with a bench covered in cushions next to a wall of potted plants, which I am sure is very coveted.

Service: Although nothing special, it was friendly and quick.

Food: Snacks, chips, yoghurts & salads.

Wifi: Yes.

Cserpes Tejivo

Cserpes Tejivo Budapest | The Macadames - 1

Location: Sütő utca, 1052 Budapest

Coffee (3.5/5): I ordered the coffee with milk topped with cream, which was rather good. A good roasty flavour from the espresso and a good milk/cream ratio. Coffee prices are on the cheap side around 300-500HUF. It was very busy when I visited so they’re obviously doing something right.

Atmosphere: Has a bit of a fast food feel with no vibe. Best for take away to walk into the park with.

Seating: Table seating inside with a few tables outside.

Service: Friendly if not a bit reserved. The barista did take his time but got there in the end.

Food: Snacks, packaged sandwiches, pastries & other cold drinks.

Wifi: No.
