Aussie Girl’s Guide To Coffee In: London, United Kingdom

Filed in: travel

Best Coffee In London | England | The Macadames - 5

Note: I am not a coffee connoisseur or anything, I just like good coffee. I don’t know the coffee lingo or the ways to describe flavour, but I have done my best to do so. If you actually know what you’re talking about, please don’t laugh. The intention of his post was to find good coffee shops to save you having to suffer bad coffee. I hope they help. Happy travels! xx

It seems that the coffee culture of Australia has well & truly spread to London.

With several Australian style boutique coffee shops popping up, I found it hard to get to all the best spots.

Birdhouse

Birdhouse | London | The Macadames - 1

Location: 123 St John’s Hill, Battersea

Coffee (3.5/5): I ordered the flat white, which was pretty darn good. Creamy with a fine roasty flavour. Served a bit too tepid for my liking though, so if you like your coffee hot, let them know.

Birdhouse | London | The Macadames - 5

Atmosphere: The decor is fresh and soothing – using a colour scheme of grey with touches of yellow, retro furnishings and cool wall art. They were closing so there were no other customers so couldn’t get a read of vibe but I think it would be a nice place to read the morning paper.

Seating: They have a few tables inside with a few outdoor seats.

Service: The cafe was closing so they were trying to rush me out the door, hence the take away cup.

Food: Pastries and packaged snacks.

Wifi: No.

Black Lab Coffee House

The Black Lab Coffee House | London | The Macadames - 1

Location: 18 Clapham, Common Southside, Lambeth.

Coffee (3.5/5)I ordered an extra hot latte and it was served tepid (annoying!) but the flavour was smooth if not slightly mild. If you like strong coffee, maybe ask for a double.

Atmosphere: The decor is pretty simple with a standard coffee-shop fit out. It was rather busy when I was there but not overly noisy.

Seating: They have a handful of tables and chairs inside plus a few outside to enjoy the sun.

Service: The staff were very friendly but I kid you not it took them 20 minutes to bring me my coffee.

Food: Packaged snacks, delicious looking paninis and pastries.

Wifi: Yes

Flat White

Flat White | London | The Macadames - 1

Location:  17 Berwick Street, Soho.

Coffee (5/5)I ordered a flat white and I literally couldn’t fault it. Their beans are full of flavour and they use Bonsoy all the way from Oz.

Flat White | London | The Macadames - 8

Atmosphere: The decor is simple with light wooden floors and simple furniture. Although small it’s well laid out. It was rather busy and noisy, so don’t expect a quiet place to enjoy your coffee. I’d suggest getting a take away and exploring the area.

Seating: They have a handful of tables & bench seats inside and a few outside to enjoy if the weather is nice.

Service: My barista was friendly, chatty and relaxed. I forgot to ask for soy and he happily remade it for me (without charging me the usual 50p surcharge!).

Food: Pastries and packaged snacks.

Wifi: No.

Monmouth

Location: 2 Park Street, The Borough.

Coffee (4/5): I ordered a flat white which was delicious. Their beans are used in cafe’s around town, so they’re obviously doing something right.

Atmosphere: The decor is relaxed and cosy using light coloured woods contrasting with sleek steels. I visited the shop next to the Borough Markets so it was crazy busy. It almost always has a line around the corner, but they move rather quickly.

Seating: They have several seats & tables inside (good luck snagging one though!).

Service: Given they are so busy, the staff are very friendly and relaxed.

Food: Pastries & sweets.

Wifi: No.

Brickwood Coffee & Bread

Location: 16, Clapham Common South Side, Lambeth.

Coffee (4.5/5): I ordered a cappuccino and it was near perfect. Their dark roast beans produce a strong (not bitter) and smooth flavour. They also have Bonsoy which you soy drinkers will love.

Brickwood Coffee & Bread | London | The Macadames - 5

Atmosphere: The decor had a very “Melbourne” vibe using light coloured woods and coffee inspired trimmings. It’s a very popular cafe so it was rather busy but surprisingly not too noisy. It’s definitely a place to come & enjoy your morning coffee over the paper.

Seating: They have several tables & seats inside, downstairs and a lovely garden with loads of tables to lap up the sun.

Service: Our waitress was friendly and casual. Although she did call us “fussy” for having vegan requirements.

Food: A full cafe serving breakfast, brunch & lunch.

Wifi: No.

You missed all the best coffee houses like Prufrock,Workshop,Notes and Nude espresso. They all except Prufrock roast their own coffee and I think that’s important as roasting is such and art and makes the experience even better but Prufrock uses beans from Square Mile that are great and the owner is the World Barista 2009 Gwilym Davies.

But keep in mind that I only drink black drip style coffee and espresso shots so I don’t know anything about the milk based drinks.

Hi Stefan, ahhh we are two peas from the same pod! I drink mostly milk coffees so we could learn a bit from each other. I will be sure to check the others out when I am back in London. Thanks for stopping by!

Next time you’re in London, definitely visit Brick House Bakery in East Dulwich. It has an Aussie / San Francisco vibe, selling its signature, award winning sourdough loaves. They even do a chocolate sourdough on Saturdays which is insanely good! The coffee is great – they use Square Mile sourced beans which change seasonally. Check out their instagram @brickhousebread and let me know what you thought.

Another great place is Browns of Brockley, in Brockley.

I loved your post about Venice, I’ll definitely be visiting some of the cafes you recommended. It’s a must to find good coffee (and good pizza) for me in a new city!

    Thanks!
