I’ve been lucky to stumble across several street food markets during my trip, one of my favourites so far being the one in Berlin.
Personally, I wish Canberra had more street food events. I love the creativity that they inspire and the fun & relaxed atmosphere. Since I’ve been away, the Mandalay Bus, a Burmese street food store, has opened in Braddon. I can’t wait to get home and see what very successful Canberran restraunteur, Andy Hollands, has done with this old Canberra relic.
Eating in fancy restaurants is all well & good, but sometimes you just need a laid back, loud and a tad grimy place to dig into your ribs without shocked looks from fellow diners.e
If you’re in London and looking for a place you can laugh loudly, spill your beer and eat with your hands, then Dalston Yard Street Feast is for you.
Commencing 16 May, it runs every Friday’s & Saturdays for 20 weeks. It’s the perfect place to un wind after a week at work and get stuck into some street food.
Don’t like the idea of eating-on-your-feet? This year, they have provided covered and seated ares, some with table service. The best part is that you can book for larger groups and they reserve a space for walk ins too.
From B.O.B’s Lobster serving up clam bake and their famous lobster roles to Pizza Pilgrims rolling-out their classic Neopolitan Pizzas and house-made Limoncello – there is something for all tastes. Although I did note there wasn’t much on offer for vegans.
If you’re heading somewhere for dinner, you can just go for drinks. There are 4 bars including The Gin Store, with over 30 gins on offer.
Don’t let the rain put you off, as over 2 thirds of the venue is covered. Or just bring a brolly.
When you arrive, you should look for this sign.
And if you arrive after 7pm, note they charge a 3 quid cover charge. But I promise you it’s well worth it.
The yard is filled with shipping containers and graffiti, giving it a grimy but trendy vibe.
You will first walk past Engine, who make hot dogs.
But I was on the hunt for Smokestak, serving delicious, tender bbq ribs.
I can never say no to ribs.
And with these, who could?
Next in line is B.O.B’s Lobster. I would loved to have had one of their lobster rolls but the line was crazy long. And at 13 quid a pop, it wasn’t cheap.
If you like burgers, there’s a Bleecker St Burger.
But I had my eye on the pork buns by Yum Buns.
These are soft buns stuffed with tender pork & some greens so you don’t feel so guilty.
And you positively must lather them in hot sauce.
Get in my belly.
I didn’t try these, but Mei Mei’s Street Cart Jian Bing chinese crepes looked good.
Next up we spotted Mama’s Jerk Station serving jerk chicken and sweet potatoes for the vegetarian option. We thought we’d be good and get the veg option, but it wasn’t that great, so I’d defiantly suggest getting the chicken.
If you’re vegetarian, I’d suggest trying Rola Wala, who do a great dahl wrap.
If the weather is nice, after grabbing a drink, try snag a seat on the deck.
Unfortunately it was well packed when I visited so we sat under the deck, tucked into a cosy corner.
As the sun goes down, tin barrel fires & lanterns will keep you warm as you lay back, stuffed and merry chatting to your friends until you get kicked out at midnight.
Waaaay more fun than a stuffy dinner don’t you think?
