My first experience with the super berry of the amazon was when I was 15 years old and working at Boost Juice.  They were well ahead of the curve and we were already selling wheatgrass shots and fresh juices to health nuts daily.  We started selling Acai (pronounced ‘ah-sigh-ee’) shots and I remember thinking, what is this strange smelling purple goop that people are going crazy for?

This ancient relative of the blueberry and cranberry is packed with antioxidants, and has been claimed to help with everything from anti-aging to cancer fighting.  Here’s some things you might not know about the acai berry:

• They are grown on a variety of palm tree that is native to the Amazon that grows up to 15m tall
• They are nicknamed the ‘Beauty Berry’ due to their anti-aging properties
• The antioxidants found in acai berries are known as anthocyanins which are excellent for your heart health and helping the body get rid of damaging free radicals
• They are highly perishable and after being picked are only good for 24 hours.  This is why you can only find them in frozen puree form in Australia

This recipe gives you a great bowl of creamy frozen acai that you can top with fruit and nuts for a really delicious breakfast or snack.  It is similar texture to a soft serve ice cream but completely healthy.

What you need:

• Blender or food processor

Ingredients (serves 4):

• 2 x sachets of frozen acai berry puree (available at health food stores)
• 1 x frozen banana (you can use fresh but frozen helps to improve the creamy texture)
• 1 tablespoon of coconut milk
• 1/2 cup of frozen mixed berries
• Mixed seeds and nuts to serve (I used chia seeds, flaked almonds and pepitas)
• Fresh seasonal fruit to serve

Method:

1. In the blender, combine the frozen acai, frozen banana, coconut milk and berries. If your blender is struggling to process it, add more liquid until it is a creamy soft-serve consistency

2. Serve immediately in a bowl topped with fruit, seeds and nuts
